Daily Living Aids and Technology

Adaptive and assistive technology can make your life much easier when you have a sensory loss.

From simple kitchen gadgets to complex pieces of technology, there is a wide range of technology available which can help you stay independent.

NESS’s Resource Centres display useful specialist equipment, sometimes called daily living aids, to help with everyday activities. Our knowledgeable staff can provide information and advice to help you choose the right gadget for you.  Demonstrations and training sessions can be arranged on an individual basis or in the home.

Equipment for people with a sight loss 

Telling the time, working in the kitchen, taking medication and using the telephone or remote control can all become more difficult with a sight loss. There are many pieces of equipment, that can help you to manage day to day tasks. We have a range of daily living aids that can help, including:

• Talking clocks and watches, which can help you to tell the time
• Tactile markers can help you identify settings on cookers, washing machines and other areas of the house
• Large button telephones can make using the phone easier
• A Liquid Level Indicator can help you make a hot drink safely.

Many of these Daily Living Aids are on display at our Resource Centres, where staff can provide information to help you choose Daily Living Aids that meet your needs.

Equipment for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing 

We have a range of equipment that can support you with day-to-day tasks if you are deaf or hard of hearing, for example

• A flashing doorbell lets you know there is someone at the door
• A loop system for the TV can make it easier to hear the TV clearly
• Vibrating alarms can alert you to danger when you can’t hear the sound alarm
• Personal listeners, that work with or without your hearing aid, can help you to hear other people in conversation.

Our staff are available to give you information and advice to help you to work out the best option for your needs.  They may also be able to come to your home to help you get the equipment set up.

Weekly drop-in sessions run for you to come in and have a look at some of the listening equipment.
