The See Hear Strategy continues to identify the need to increase awareness of the sight loss and hearing loss in the care home population to ensure older people in care homes are supported to manage their sensory impairment.
There is a clear link between sight loss, hearing loss and cognitive well-being, and our Sensory Loss in Care Homes training will look at this link, explore the prevalence of sight loss and hearing loss in Care Homes, and introduce some basic skills and knowledge so Care Home staff feel confident supporting residents with their sight and/or hearing loss.
Sensory Loss in Care Homes Training is designed to be easy to deliver in busy environment of the Care Home, consisting of a two-hour Visual Awareness Training and a two hour Deaf Awareness Training session, which are delivered independently of each other and at a time to suit the Care Home,
The interactive training will include a small element of presentation, big and small group discussions and actvities to explore sight loss and hearing loss respectively and identify simple but important things to consider when supporting residents with sight and/or hearing loss. We will also briefly look at some of the aids and adaptations that residents my find useful to manage day to day life with their sight and/or hearing loss.
Currently, this training is only available to Care Homes in Aberdeen City, as we have a small and limited funding to deliver the training for free in Aberdeen. We are happy to explore options for paying for training for Care Homes outwith Aberdeen or when the funding in Aberdeen runs out.
